Derek James Geibe
June 19, 1984 - December 21, 2004
Derek was a big baby and his father wanted him to have a name that would not have a nickname. That failed really quick, as a man named Mark Youberg came in and said, "Big D is looking really good." That name stuck forever...
Derek was born on June 19th of 1984 in Paynesville, Minn. We were with the carnival and I saw 29 doctors before having him. They all said he would be born naturally. Nope, not Big D. He was going to be a C-Section.
As life went on, Derek loved his friends and he loved animals also. I often thought he was going to squeeze them to death as he would grip his teeth so tight as if to hit someone. But he never hurt them, not once.
As Derek got older, he began to get kind of ornery. He loved to fight and was not scared of nothing or how tall you were. We tried several times to get him help and they said until he got into trouble they could do nothing. All kinds of things broke lose then as he did get into trouble...
We moved several times as his dad and I were not together. We lived in S. Dakota, Iowa, Ohio, Georgia, Colorado, and our last stop was Maine. Derek would bring home the homeless and we would keep them. I raised many of the children that D brought home. It was okay as we were all family.
Derek finally graduated in Charleston, Maine. He got his GED and took up Culinary Arts. That is too funny because I couldn't get him to cook nothing only to find out his cooking was very good. Derek loved to rap and inspired many people to this day.
I remember him saying right before he went to Iowa to see his dad, "I wonder if I would be a good dad." I never got to find out although I waited till the last day when there would be no possible chance to find out if he did leave a grandbaby for me...
Derek died drug and alcohol free. He did a lot of drugs and drinking in his life and wondered what people would think of him if he wasn't fighting or doing drugs and drinking... We found out when he got his GED that he was Bipolar. That is why he was so mean and could fight at the drop of a hat.
Derek loved his family and his Uncle Rob Geibe. Rob was struck by a train while on his way to work and killed. Derek is also in heaven with my brother Larry Lee, my mother, his grandfather, great grandmother, and my grandparents.
He will be greatly missed and someday, son, I will come to see you, as God will kill me with his love just like he took you...
